growing poppy in outdoor and indoor
papaver somniferum commonly called poppy plant can be grown outdoor as well as indoor, however their cultivation is restricted by govt agencies because of their frequent misuse as narcotics.but still cultivated for ornamental purposes despite being banned.as long as you are not gonna misuse it, you too can cultivate it depending upon your locality.it is not legal every where even for ornamental purpose(for obtaining opium it is illegal nearly everywhere following are the steps you need to have an account of when cultivating poppy plant.
- Buy a good quality seed
- get to a proper suitable atmospheric condition
- sow the seed
- wait for the plant to get mature and open up the flower.
- harvest poppy plant ( for seeds dare not to cultivate for opium).
for papaver somniferum a soil of wet condition and appropriate pH is necessary.it is recommended that soil should be porous and not dense. try to have a soil of neutral pH for better cultivation and growth. as far as the climate concerned, poppy plant prefer a cool climate over the hot one.if you are belonging to an area which is hot in climate then select a spot near your area at a higher elevation, or a congested area where light reaches the minimum.
if you are cultivating poppy plant in a garden in your house.i.e you wanna cultivate indoor, you can sow directly by hand.in the other case if outdoor cultivation is required you may need some devices to distribute seeds evenly over a large area.
the whole life cycle of papaver somniferum is 5 years if you want to obtain seeds.the fully mature bulbs will generate many seeds which you can again cultivate.
